Floyd on the Bereavement List.

ATLANTA -- As the Cubs prepared for Friday night's game, they were reminded that baseball is indeed just that -- a game -- getting a major dose of perspective about an hour and a half before first pitch.
Cliff Floyd, originally penciled in to start in right field and bat fourth Friday night, was a last-minute scratch and left the team to fly home to Chicago to tend to his ailing father.
The Cubs put Floyd on the bereavement list, meaning that the earliest he can return to action is Monday night's makeup game with Houston at Wrigley Field.
Shortstop Mike Fontenot, who turns 27 on Saturday, will be called up from Triple-A Iowa to replace Floyd and spend his birthday with the Cubs in Atlanta. Fontenot, who is currently fourth in the Pacific Coast League in hitting with a .343 average in 53 games, has played in nine Major League games, including two against the Mets in mid-May, when he went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
Ironically, Cubs manager Lou Piniella talked before the game about the possibility of bringing up another infielder, specifically Fontenot, to shore up the depleted infield with the injury to third baseman Aramis Ramirez.
"If we looked at another infielder here, the kid would be Fontenot," said Piniella. "We brought him up once for a couple of days. He's played really well down there since he's gone back. I would think that would be the kid that we would bring up."
Aramis still wait and see: Ramirez joined the team in Atlanta and was in uniform Friday night, but, while his status was officially uncertain, his chances of appearing in this series weren't good.
"His knee is sore," said Piniella. "He's going to start getting his treatment and once the trainer gets a good look at him, we'll get a better handle. He's available to pinch-hit, but I don't think he'll play this series, and [he will be back] probably some time the middle part of next week."
While Ramirez was pronounced available to pinch-hit, Piniella declared it would only be in an "emergency-only" situation.
"Obviously we don't want him to re-aggravate it," said the Cubs skipper. "And, in the smallest of instances, if we had to DL him then we could back-date it. But I don't think it will come to that at all."

Cubs Need to Look at Jarrod Saltalamacchia

With the Cubs having there drama with Barrett and Z, one if not both will depart from the team next year. The cubs are more concerned with Z leaving than Barrett. Barrett has had terrible defense year and not to mention his offense hasn't been to great either. The cubs do have HANK WHITE over the next few years but to me he is simply a backup. Koyie Hill has shown promise in his short stint with the cubs but he wont be a catcher who catches 140 games a year. The Cubs do have some decent catchers in the system in Geovany Soto and Jacob Fox. Soto has been anything but consistent with his defense and offense. Fox on the other had has been playing OF, 1b, and C. He needs to work on his catching before he gets the call to the big leagues.

With this delimma the Cubs I think should look to aquire a catcher via trade rather than signing on out of the free agent class next year. The free agent market for catchers is very weak, the good ones are gonna get huge deals( such as Ivan Rod, Posada, and Lo Duca) The others have options as like Posada, Bennett, Barajas, and Valentin. Short of getting a Ivan Rod, Posada, or Lo Duca for a good price and low years, I think you would have to go the young route.

The Braves have a good dilemma on there hands. The have 3 great offensive and defensive young catchers( Saltalamacchia,McCann, and Pena). They have been experimenting with Jarrod at 1st but he hasn't done that well, he is definitely a catcher and a good one. Not to mention Thorman isn't doing that bad at 1st for this first full year in the big leagues. The Braves just assume trade either Jarrod or Byran for there holes that they will have next year. They will undoubtedly lose Andruw Jones to the free agent market and there pitching is getting either older. In my opinion the Braves need a solid lefty in the rotation and a good young outfielder.

The Braves are not just gonna give away Jarrod Saltalamacchia, they will get tremendous talent for him. The Cubs do have some young pitching they could part with to get the talented catcher and I think they should push very hard to get this guy! He is hitting .300 with 2 hr, and he is a switch hitter who is only like 22 years old! You get this guy, you have a solid catcher for many year to come. Not to mention this move would cost you nothing but players and you can save your money for other needs such as pitching and SS.

The Cubs should have some players to get this deal done, and they need to try hard to get this guy. If that means trading a young pitcher or two not named Rich Hill, or trading a young position player not named Theriot or Pie then so be it. If the Cubs can get another team involved that would make things a whole hell of alot easier, a team like Tampa Bay( Rocco Baldelli or Delmon Young) or the Dodgers( Ethier, Kemp, Delwyn Young, or Lonely) who is stockpiled with young talent. The Cubs need a good young catcher on this team and Jarrod Saltalamacchia is that guy!

The Cubs get Vitters in Draft!

Thanks to cubs.com-

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs were looking for offensive talent Thursday with the No. 3 pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and they found it in high school third baseman CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs were looking for offensive talent Thursday with the No. 3 pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and they found it in high school third baseman Josh Vitters.
Vitters, who turns 18 on Aug. 27, ranked as the top pure high school hitter by Baseball America and batted .371 with eight homers and 25 RBIs for Cypress (Calif.) High School. Baseball America also touted him as the player closest to playing in the Major Leagues among all high school pitchers and position players.
"We're extremely happy to have Josh," said Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken. "I've been fortunate to be around good first rounders in the past, and I think he's got those capabilities."
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays selected pitcher David Price with the No. 1 overall pick Thursday. With the second pick, the Kansas City Royals took high school third baseman/catcher Mike Moustakas.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Vitters was considered one of the top hitting prospects in the Draft because of his compact swing, bat speed and athleticism.
"Nobody really taught me how to swing the bat," Vitters said. "My swing's all natural; I haven't really done any hitting instruction or anything like that. It's just always come to me."
One person he did give credit to for helping him develop into the baseball player he is today was his older brother Christian, who played at Fresno State and was a 10th-round pick by the Oakland Athletics last June.
"I think a lot of it, I can attribute to my brother, because he's always played baseball and he's always helped me out with everything," Vitters said. "Him, along with my parents, have played a huge role in my success."
The selection of Vitters marks the second straight year Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken has selected a position player rather than a pitcher. Last year, the Cubs and Wilken chose Clemson outfielder Tyler Colvin in the first round. Prior to that, the Cubs had taken a pitcher with eight of their last 11 first-round selections.
The third baseman has received numerous honors, including MVP honors at the 2006 Cape Cod High School Classic last July, and he was named Gatorade's 2007 California Player of the Year.
In the 2006 Aflac All-American Classic last summer, he was 3-for-4 with two doubles, and collected those hits off Michael Main, Madison Bumgarner and Rick Porcello, all pitchers who went in the first round of the Draft on Thursday.
Wilken said he had not had much time to talk contract negotiations with Vitters, who has committed to attend Arizona State this fall on a baseball scholarship. But both sides were optimistic about getting the deal done soon.
"We haven't gotten too far because there was some mystery as to what Kansas City was going to do," Wilken said. "I think we can get Josh Vitters in a Cubs uniform, and hopefully in some time period, in a Major League uniform."

Vitters, who said he was a little nervous about falling lower in the draft after a bout with pneumonia forced him to sit out nearly three weeks of his senior season, said he is excited about being a part of the Cubs organization.
"I really started taking notice of the Cubs when the whole Sammy Sosa/Mark McGwire thing was going on [in 1998]," Vitters said. "I was watching a lot of the Cubs on WGN because I get that station down in California. That's probably when they first got on my radar.
"I just love their whole tradition and how they play ball, and it's just a great fit for me.".

The Cubs made a great pick this year. Vitters has great upside and he is a great talented baseball player. He is the closest to be ready and we could see him as early as 09 season. Tho Aram is here for 5 years, I imagine Vitters will be tried out at SS and 2B. Will be interesting how this guy develops.

Gallagher called up, Guzman to DL. Aram Hurt!

As said yesterday-

MILWAUKEE -- At 2 a.m. ET Wednesday, Sean Gallagher was getting his hair cut. As much as the right-hander liked his long locks, he wanted to look professional when he arrived in the big leagues.
Gallagher was promoted to the Cubs and arrived in time for Wednesday's game at Miller Park, taking the spot in the bullpen of right-hander Angel Guzman, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list. His father gave family and friends a heads-up by posting the news on the Internet.

Thanks to cubs.com-

MILWAUKEE -- Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez had to leave Wednesday's game in the second inning after injuring his left knee running to first base.
Ramirez suffered a strained left knee, the team said. He was trying to beat the throw from Milwaukee shortstop J.J. Hardy in the second, and was safe on an error by the infielder. Ramirez appeared to be hobbling after he reached first base. He was lifted defensively in the Brewers second inning.
Ramirez was batting .299. He also reached in the first inning on a fielding error by Hardy. The Cubs third baseman is second in most RBIs by National League third basemen with 39, two behind Florida's Miguel Cabrera.

He is listed day to day and not expected to be put on the DL. It will be a similar situation to what occurred with Dlee this year. He will probably get the series off against Atlanta, it might not even be that long.

HOT RUMOR!

Very hot rumor-

Unconfirmed Rumor: Gallagher Called Up

http://www.northsidebaseball.com/For...ic.php?t=41231 northside baseball.com the poster who reports this is his DAD. he has been correct on all of his other promotions so i tend to believe this.

Wow would this be a very interesting move. Here is why it would be interesting.

- Gallagher has never pitched out of the Pen, so it is thought that he may actually start a game in Atlanta. His dad says the whole family is going to be in Atlanta to watch him pitch. so that almost tells u hes going to start. His next scheduled start would have been tomorrow which is zambrano's day. But his dad said they would be in Atlanta so who knows.

-This man claims to be his father, and he has always announced when he is promoted and they have been before its announced and he has always been correct.

-There is currently 25 men on the roster so one person would have to be traded, released, or sent down. Could this mean Eyre is gone? Howry? or maybe Jones has found a new home and he takes the spot as a pitcher because who really needs 6 outfielders?

- If he plains on starting which pitcher is not starting in Atlanta. My guess is Zambrano. Or is Big Z in the process of being traded?

There is so much speculation here and it may not be true but if this is the case it will be interesting to see what moves are made.

Gallagher is 7-2 ERA 3.39 BB 24 K 54 WHIP1.28 in AA.

Sweet Lou out for 3 more games. Cubs trying to unload Jones. Dye is availiable, Abreu 2!

Lots of Rumors and News today-

-Cubs manager Lou Piniella has been suspended three additional games starting tonight. Alan Trammell will continue coaching the team while Piniella is still allowed in the clubhouse just not in the dugout.

-The Cubs are attempting to trade Jacque Jones, a move that would clear the way for Felix Pie to play regularly in center field. There was little interest in Jones over the winter even though he was coming off a fine season, so why would anyone want to take on his contract after he's opened this year at .248/.309/.352? The Padres, White Sox and Twins are among the contenders in need of a left-handed bat, but Jones wouldn't be as much of an upgrade as the Padres might want and the other two don't seem like matches. The Cubs might end up keeping Jones and using him as their primary right fielder, opening up the possibility of a Matt Murton deal.

I really hope the cubs deal him! Pie needs to play everyday in CF!

- According to many sites and Foxsports.com, Dye could be had for pitching and maybe an outfielder. The Yanks and Sox have discussed an Abreu for Dye swap and this rumor does have legs. I dont see how this trade would benefit the Sox. They have been rumored of a fire sale and starting young so getting an aging Abreu and his 16m option and 2 mill buyout next year wouldn't be starting fresh. The Sox are still in it, but Kenny Williams may be mailing it in. Mark is also a free agent after this season for the Sox along with Tadahito Iguchi. Why not try to do a cross town trade? What about a Murton with Guzman or Marmol or J.R. Mathes or Mark Holliman for Dye? He would look damn good batting 5th in the lineup!

What about Abreu? If the Yanks are looking to deal Abreu, why not give them a call. See if they will do a Jones for Abreu? or Murton for Abreu? See if they will do that. Couldnt hurt giving them a call. Hell we will even throw in Eyre, Cotts, Navoa, or Howry.

Lou Suspended Indefinitly. Pie up, Ward to DL.

Thanks to ESPN-

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella was suspended indefinitely and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Sunday for his latest dirt-kicking tirade against an umpire.
Piniella was ejected in the eighth inning of Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. After Angel Pagan was thrown out trying to steal third, Piniella stormed out of the dugout and kicked dirt as he argued and tossed his cap, leading to his ouster by third-base umpire Mark Wegner.
MLB also said that Piniella made contact with Wegner during the outburst.
Piniella will begin serving his suspension Sunday. The length of Piniella's suspension will be determined Monday after a meeting with John McHale Jr., the MLB executive vice president for administration.
The Cubs have lost six straight entering Sunday's series finale against the Braves.

------------------------------------------------------------

Ward was put on the DL yesterday and Pie was called up last night. Hope to see Pie in center today because god knows no one else should be there besides him!
